sessions > What Was Your First Concert?...

This is usually an interesting question to talk about as both a spectator or a performer...

I thought of bringing this question up to the forum because this past week, I took my 10 year old son to see his first concert... KISS. I had seen them back in '79 and again in '99, both with the original line-up... This time the band had Eric Singer & Tommy Thayer wearing Peter Criss' & Ace Frehley's make-up... It didn't seem to matter as the band put on a fantastic show leaving my son in awe of the spectacle and scope of it all... He was in sensory overload for sure. One thing I know is that he is now a fan of seeing music performed live... He really wants to see CHICAGO the next time they come through town as my son is a trumpet player, a fan of CHICAGO's music and he wants to see that instrument in a popular music setting. And yes, he is definitely getting his Dad's eclectic musical tastes that run all over the map.

After the concert, I could see that the hook has been set as far as music with my son.

So, what was MY 1st concert?... It was seeing Andy Gibb when I was 16 years old in 1978. My girlfriend at the time REALLY wanted to see him... I don't really remember much about it as it was hard to hear any music through all the screaming girls... I remember looking around to make sure nobody I knew was around to see me. Let's just say that I remember more about how the evening ended than the concert we went to.

Yeah, my first concert was pretty lame.... I know that there's better ones stories out there...

Let's hear 'em.

A buddy of mine in 7th grade, Gary, was being "babysat" by his older brother...his brother wanted to go to a scheduled concert REAL BAD, but was stuck with his little brother. So, Gary didn't want to go alone to this concert...so enter Eddy. Innocent little Eddy. We all head to Notre Dame's Athletic & Convocation Center (basketball arena) to attend the concert. Really weird people were entering this place...all in black and stuff. Little do I know I am about to see my first Alice Cooper show....Welcome To My Nightmare.

All I can remember is this HUGE Tarantula dropping down from the backdrop of the stage....can't remember anything else, other than it was not a place that 7th grader should be. Walked home....scared stiff. HA

Mine was Yes - the 90125 tour in 1983. What an amazing first concert. I remember that whoever was supposed to open for them wasn't able (for whatever reason), so they showed two Bugs Bunny cartoons. What a riot!

From backstage, my first concerts were Johnny Mathis, while my father played piano and conducted. As a teen, my first concert was in 1977, a tripe bill: Foreigner, Cheap Trick, and Little River Band, at Indiana University's Assembly Hall. So few tickets were sold that they only used half the Hall. Same place where Bobby Knight became famous, and just 3 years before, Elvis played to a sold-out house. Lotta concerts since then, both backstage and in the audience . . .

I love the fact that I went to my first rock concert with my Methodist Sunday school class. We saw Jimi Hendrix at the State Fair Music Hall in 1967. He blew my mind and I knew what I wanted to do the rest of my life. I quit football soon after and started growing my hair out. Those wacky Methodists!

Mine was THE POLICE in HAMBURG on their SYNCHRONICITY tour 1984 when I was 14 - amazing gig. My second was MEN AT WORK, which was a bit odd.
